July Is Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Month

July 1, 2020

Previously recognized as Minority Mental Health Month, BIPOC Mental Health Month was created to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face regarding mental illness in the United States. LifeWays aims to shed light on the experiences BIPOC communities face regarding mental health services.

Including “B” and “I” (black and indigenous) in addition to “POC” (people of color), is honoring the unique experiences of black and indigenous individuals and their communities, as well as the spectrum of existence and experience by people of color.

The longstanding effects of racism include effects on mental health. Racism can be a traumatic experience and trauma can affect the way people think, act, and feel.  BIPOC are often faced with years - even generations - of trauma, which is linked to mental health concerns today.

If things don’t feel normal to you right now, you’re not alone. If you’re black, indigenous, or a person of color and are feeling stressed, it makes sense!

LifeWays is here for you 24/7 with our access and crisis phone lines. For help, call 1 (800) 284-8288.
