National Suicide Hotline Designation Act - ONE STEP CLOSER

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has encouraged the effort to pass the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act (H.R.4194/S.2661), to designate "988" as the future three-digit phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This easy-to-remember number will make mental health crisis services more accessible.

On Wednesday, May 13, the U.S. Senate passed the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act unanimously. The U.S. House of Representatives has also included the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act in the legislative package responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, which will be considered later today.

This is a major recognition by the Federal government of the need to make suicide prevention and mental health a national priority.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) created an automated and easy way to help you submit a letter to your U.S. Representative and urge them to pass this crucial legislation and make the 988 number a reality.
